Yoga for Autism and ADHD

Many children (and adults) with Autism are often in a heightened state of stress or reactivity. Yoga for Autism helps reduce this by taking us to a place of calm where we are better able to interact with the world around us.

Autistic children can be disconnected from their bodies or the world around them. This compromises their feedback systems and they often use up their reserves of ‘coping chemicals’ early in the day so they don’t have the resources to manage the challenges and stresses in their lives. Their sympathetic nervous system in on ‘red alert’. Yoga switches on the parasympathetic nervous system allowing the body to digest food and produce the necessary coping hormones.

Aims and benefits of yoga for Autistic children include:

  • Improved motor planning and control
  • Improved self-awareness: both body and mind
  • Better ability to self-regulate behaviours
  • Development of balance and the ability to relax and release tension, fear and frustration
  • Improved resilience and a reduced stress reaction
  • Improved immune function
  • Better quality and quantity of sleep
  • Enhanced sense of emotional balance

Yoga for Autism sessions are held at the Equanimity Yoga studio in Exeter. Alternatively I can come to your home – with Autistic children it is often beneficial to use a location that your child finds the most calming. Parents and siblings are also welcome to join the session providing this doesn’t trigger your child.

All sessions are tailored to meet the needs of the individual.

I have trained in Yoga for Autism and ADHD with the Special Yoga Foundation.

Yoga for Autism sessions are £40 per hour plus travelling expenses if I am coming to you. The classes are paid via bank transfer prior to the class. You can save money by booking a block of six classes for £210.
